This enables readers to be sure that they choose books that match their own ability. There is very careful and gentle graduation from Band to Band. The books can be shared with an adult or read independently. They promote the enjoyment of reading through reading real, satisfying stories with a beginning, a middle and an end. Rosie's Rides is at Book Band 3 in the Start Reading series. Rosie is going on all sorts of Rides, rollercoaster rides, pony rides, jeep rides and train rides. All have their adventures.

This book is suitable for Key Stage 1. KS1 covers school years 1 and 2, and ages 5-7 years. A key stage is any of the fixed stages into which the national curriculum is divided, each having its own prescribed course of study. At the end of each stage, pupils are required to complete standard assessment tasks. This book is aimed at children in primary school. This book is at Book Band Yellow. Books at this level present children with new vocabulary. The amount of words per page has slightly increased, with one new word for every twenty familiar words. Non-fiction titles at this level build on children's interests and encourage discussion around high-quality photographs. Pupil Targets: (i) retell a story from memory, (ii) read a book without pointing at the words, unless they get stuck, (iii) blend phonemes together to understand a word, e. g. d-o-g, (iv) use punctuation, such as speech marks and question marks, (v) notice and correct some of their mistakes, (vi) sometimes, they can work out what is going to happen next in a story.
