Even young readers will have heard of the great queen who gave her name to a period that spanned the best part of a century but here they learn of Victoria's early life, her struggles against a dominating family, her accession to the throne at only eighteen years old, her happy marriage to Albert, then despair at his death. her story is the story of the golden era of the British Empire, and the narrative blends historical detail with the more personal events of Victoria's life. Lucas Wellington has been teaching students with BESD in inner city Bristol schools for the last 10 years and is currently part of the senior leadership team of the North Bristol BESD school. For four of these years he was Literacy co-ordinator, so was involved in buying suitable and engaging reading material, co-ordinating reading intervention programmes and promoting literacy across the school. His dismay at the suitability of the books available for such students led to him creating his own materials to develop literacy, as he became well aware that poor literacy and the stress this causes is a major cause of unsettled behaviour in classrooms. He lives in Bristol. Dave McTaggart is an illustrator of picture books, junior fiction and teenage fiction. He has illustrated children's books for a wide range of publishers including BBC Books, Harper Collins, Random House, Oxford University Press, Walker Books and Penguin. He lives in London.
