This is a collection of two books in one volume, both are stories about young girls and horses. The first story is about Bridget. Bridget loves her woolly pony William, but her father thinks that he is just a waste of money, until the day of the great snow storm. In the second story, the huge chalk cut-out horse on the hillside above Susan's village is threatened. Susan decides to take action. Jane Gardam has also written "The Summer After the Funeral", "Through the Dolls' House Door", "A Few Fair Days", "Kit", "Kit in Boots" and "The Hollow Land", which won the 1981 Whitbread Children's Book of the Year prize.

Jane Gardam has twice won the Whitbread Award - for her children's book The Hollow Land and, in 1991, for her adult novel The Queen of the Tambourine. In addition, God on the Rocks was runner-up for the Booker Prize and Bridget and William (now available as one of two stories in the Walker Double Black Woolly Pony, White Chalk Horse) was Commended for the Carnegie Medal. Her other titles include Tufty Bear and The Kit Stories. She is married with three grown-up children and lives in an old house in Kent, which has the ruins of a monastery, a chapel and a ghost in the garden.
