Luisa "Luli" Gray was born March 4, 1945 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Luli was an actress, writer, and professional cook. As an adult she lived in Boston and Greenwich Village for many years before moving to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she lived the rest of her life. Her first novel, Falcon's Egg, was an ALA Notable Book. She died August 16, 2017, in Chapel Hill. During her time at the Rhode Island School of Design, Madelyn Goodnight knew she wanted to illustrate for kids. When she was little, she imagined entering into the worlds that children's books created. Growing up in Oklahoma gave her plenty of room to imagine, play, and dream. Her family encouraged her to explore anything and everything and had a deep connection to their Native American heritage, one that emphasized the magic of storytelling. With each new book or piece of art, Goodnight tries to convey that magic to the viewer. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
